Yesterday at @jeffpulver's breakfast my friend Idan Gazit shot a video where he interviewed some people about… well, all sorts of things. It turned out great, and funny, and I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with you. THANK YOU IDAN!!! :-)

Team Help Us Win Says Hi

On 14/01/2009, in help us win, by Niv Calderon

Today was the first time we used video to capture our social media situation room team.
Until today, even though we used photos (some photos we shot were used against us), and some of us were interviewd to news papers and news sites, we tried not to be videoed.

We used this occasion to say Goodbye to a friend of ours leaving for the states. Ilana was one of our team leaders. Thank you Ilana.

I believe we succeeded in creating a feeling that there is an Israeli presense online. It's not the end though. It's not a question of who will win. There are many anti-Israeli forces that joined forces to create a one dimension picture of an Israeli evilness. As a situation room we saw a lot of many things being used against us. Our goal was, and still is- to create a balance where there is no balance and to be stand point to everyone who wants to help Israel online.

We used a lot of peaceful force of openness, we engaged in countless conversations and in multiple languages, we brought the brightest minds in social media to consult and execute for us, we've invented the wheel in managing a social media situation room and we still havent exhausted our brain power and social media tools we'll use.

In the last 2 weeks I've proudly been a part of a group, a social media task force, which goal is to fight a war on the social web, a war on the world's public opinion.
In the last 2 weeks I've found myself watching hundreds of videos, reading reports, columns, blog posts, tracking comments, everything social media you can think about.
If you're asking yourself what does that have to do with my post's title- It's this- Pornography is winning the public opinion of this war. War has nothing to do with logic, has nothing to do with reason, has nothing to do with facts. In today's wars, the side who uses more pornography wins.

When this is the case, and when I'm standing on Israel's side, Israel is losing the world's public opinion because WE use less pornography while the other side is a pornography manufacturer, and you know how people like watching pornography. What do I mean when I say pornography? I just deleted a comment from a spammer that linked to an Aljazeera page, showing dead children, leaving no room for anything but sadness. This is the link, this is what I mean when I say pornography, war pornography.

It's only when I came across some pro Israeli videos, that I realized I'm watching pornography and that WE don't make use of it.
For years, Israel has been suffering from Terror attacks. We lived in fear from people who raise their children to want to die while killing Jews. We are bitter when the world comes to us, blaming us vicious blood sucking Jews, that "innocent women and children" die when we go fight terror. When we tell the world Hamas is using the population as Human Shilds, it's not enough, I don't know why, maybe it's the Jew filter the world has, or maybe… maybe it's that we're not using pornography.
Should we use war pornography? Will this help the world see something else other than being totally blind to what Israel is saying?

Let's see if we can make good pornography. The Next 2 videos are very hard to watch, but they do the trick. Don't watch them if you're sensitive. The last video I'll call soft porn. It works great on subtle Europeans and post post traumatic Americans and also do the trick.

Helping Israel on Social Media: 3

On 03/01/2009, in help us win, by Niv Calderon

I took this weekend off from the social media situation room to fix my new apartment (as of January 1st) in Tel Aviv but being away from it made me realize we're starting the second week of the fighting.

I'm now working on a paper to produce new goals, new destinations, new ideas on how to stand in our online multi-lingual, multi-cultural battle.

This is where I need you.

1- I'm looking for social thinkers from across the globe to produce breakthrough ideas and that can get them done for us.

2- I'm looking for SEO and SEM experts for advice and implementation.

3- I'm looking for cartoon artists for a project we want to create.

So what have we been doing so far?
Fighting the "First Social War" made us realize we are fighting a multi-platform, multi-language, cross-cultural, cross-technology battle. Two days ago(Tuesday) I took part in building the Jerusalem Social Media Situation Room for the recent Israel Hamas conflict. Yesterday I've joined forces (along with other friends) with the second situation room in the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya which generously hosts us and let us use its facilities, personnel and connections.

I proudly present the social media tools we've launched in the last 48 hours thanks to many volunteers who helped from home or came to Jerusalem and the IDC headquarters and spent hours from their time and gave their brains, hands and used their personal social graphs to help us in this first ever organized social media war effort. War brings something else out of people, I've learned this in the Second Lebanon War the first time, now I realize it the second time. It's a fascinating human phenomenon to look at, generouciry at its peak.

This is what we've got so far:
1- A blog: Help Us Win. The center of attention.
2- A multi language Status Report center that can show you (currently in English and French) what's going on all over the social web, divided to tabs for the different subjects and languages.
3- A Recruiting System – please register if you wanna help.
4- a Twitter account.
5- Two Facebook groups, in English and French.
6- A Press Releases Blog for government and IDF press releases. They should be more available anyway.

These are the social tools we've used so far:
1- Gmail
2- Google Docs
3- WordPress
4- Tumblr
5- Picasa Web
6- Netvibes
7- Twitter
8- Facebook
9- Youtube
10- Wufoo Forms

Few last things:
1- I want to thank all the amazing people who've joined us in this adventure.
2- The Jerusalem and IDC situation rooms are open every day and help is always needed.
3- If you have time to come help us- do that- just come…bring a laptop if you got one.
4- I want to thank all of you who support us and support Israel on the social web.
5- Any videos, posts or photos you think worth promoting- send to helpuswinisrael@gmail.com
6- You can follow my Twitter as well, I tweet a lot.

6- More is yet to come.

Special personal thanks to Kfir Pravda, for his part creative thinking part coaching he's been giving me in the last few days.

Help Israel on Social Media: 1

On 29/12/2008, in help us win, Misc, by Niv Calderon

Hey guys,

In the past 48 hours we've been working on creating a social media initiative for what's going on in South Israel.

I don't have time to share all the details now, but from what i've seen so far, there a few things we need as soon as possible.

This post is probably one of many i'll write in the near future, each of these will be as short as possible and will ask for your help in different ways. I'll probably post this on my blog as well (www.nivcalderon.com) to give people the ability to share it, so please share it as much as you can (the Facebook note and the blog post)

Things we need right now:
1- We're building our personnel lists now so we need a list of people you know who are willing to donate their time and passion for this cause. we need the list with these columns filled up: full name, phone, email, twitter, facebook, blog, field of specialty, languages.

Please send all lists (please use excel for this) to my email: nivcalderon at gmail.com.
Please share this as much as you can.
If you have any questions, please use the comments

i'll keep you posted,
Niv

Being Social Media

On 01/12/2008, in Net Sociology, מדיה חברתית, by Niv Calderon

[Originally written: November 26, 2008)

In four days I'm going to speak about Social Media in Seminar Hakibutzim in Tel Aviv in front of entrepreneurs and other internet people or people who want to use social media to elevate their business. The last few days were really exciting for me because of that.

In this session I am not going to speak about how to open a successful Facebook profile. I am not going to speak about how to make a video viral on YouTube and not even on how to be a successful blogger.

Social media is just not it. Well, it is, but than again- it just isn't. Well, it's more than that, and if you think that opening profiles in all social utilities is enough- guess again.

Social media is about being there, online, but also offline. It's about being available. You don't speak to people, you speak with them. You interact. And- you listen.

This video embaded down here is one of the best interviews I have seen in the last year or so concerning social media. It's not about doing social media- it's about being social media, and to be social media you need to be in the field and participate, that's social media, that's understanding the heart of it.

What else?
Jeff Pulver describes it the best: Eurythmics » Sweet Dreams Lyrics, Think of social media and you got the entire picture

Everybody's looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused

Social Media, The Final Frontier

On 19/11/2008, in Culture, English, marketing 2.0, by Niv Calderon

I am so utterly excited about the upcoming release of Star Trek 11 in May 2009, with a new and young Kirk, a young Spock and a young crew… of actors and of writers with J.J Abrahms at the helm.

I have been a Star Trek fan even before I was a Star Trek Fan… I became a fan when I was 14.
At 16 realized i would love it forever, at 21 I opened a Hebrew website (kinda like a blog) and wrote there about Star Trek Enterprise' s weekly episodes for 4 years, at 25 I led the Israeli campaign to Save Enterprise as a part of the international campaign. Yes, I'm a Trekkie, I'm proud of it.

As you all know, Enterprise never made it after season 4. The TV ratings were low, but the episode downloads were very high. Like many other TV shows, there are more viewers online than there are viewers on TV. you know what I mean, right?

It's almost 2009 now and Trekkie stays a Trekkie, but I'm also into social media and the affect it has on people is astonishing.

Now I wonder, its the social media era, we're all into buzz, socializing and avanglizing the stuff we love, and Star Trek 11-  this one has to succeed this time because if it fails, the suits at Viacom will never give another chance to trek through the stars again and we have to make it work (I hope a successful movie will create a new series, or another movie, or a mini series, or something), and it can work, if we all work together on this, link to the movie site (it's great by the way), link to each other, buzz it, push it higher, beam it up to where no movie has gone before, it's in our hands. Make it so.

Here are some screen shots from the new Star Trek trailer, have fun.

ps- if you're a Trekkie too leave me a msg, its been a while since i've met new Trekkie friends

Some Rules for Social Media Users

On 18/11/2008, in מדיה חברתית, by Niv Calderon

Add people you know and care about
Don't add people you never heard of just because they asked, close circles aren't close enough for you to get feeds from them most of the time
Don't worry about how it looks, you'll see the benefit from it later
Send a Happy Birthday, try doing it every day, it'll pay you off
Meet your social graph in the real life. Real life is the extension of your social web.
Social web is the extension of your real life relationships
It's like the chicken and the egg, but here we actually know what came first
Be who you really are, don't try to fake or pretend, your social graph has a photographic memory, be careful
News travels fast, you can use it
The world is flat, you can use it
In social networks it is possible for anyone to know anyone, be careful whom you cyber with.
Share links
Share what you're doing with your friends
Comment
Work on your profile continuously, it's not meant to be a monument
Don't be afraid to remove people you're totally not in touch with
See what's up with your friends, you'd be surprised at what you might find
Reading is not enough- Comment
Write something in your blogging platform
Link to others
Be large with what you do
The places you're stopped in your social web activity are the places you're stopped in your life
But don't be reckless, be smart
Be authentic
Be loving, it's good for business, any business, even if it's not business
Remember

Social Media Landscape
