השבוע התבשרנו שיאהו חתמה על הסכם השתתפות בפרסומות שלה עם גוגל. דובר על סכום של משהו כמו 800 מליון דולר. ההסכם הזה מגיע אחרי הסירוב של יאהו להירכש על ידי מיקרוסופט תמורת סכום של כמה עשרות מיליארדי דולרים לפני כחודש.

אתמול התבשרנו שמייקרוסופט השיקה את שירות התשלום שלה עבור שימוש במנוע החיפוש שלה. מאשבל מדווחים על זה שיוזרים יוכלו ללכת לאיביי ולהשתמש ב"כסף המייקרוסופטי" שלהם בקניות שלהם באתר.

אנחנו עדים פה למהלכים של ייאוש ואי אפשר לראות את זה אחרת:

תאהבו אותי, בבקשה
1- מייקרוסופט מפסידה את הקרב שלה על האינטרנט בצדק (כשהפונקציה הידועה היא שמי ששולט בחיפוש שולט באינטרנט) מול גוגל.
2- מייקרוסופט מצידה ניסתה לרכוש את יאהו, מהלך שהיה מכניס אותה חזק לתחומי התמונות (פליקר) מייל (ליאהו יש את כמות המשתמשים הרבה ביותר מכל דוארי הרשת) וכמובן- החיפוש (יש עוד כמה תחומים, אבל זה פחות משנה).
3- מייקרוסופט מוכנה לשלם כסף רק שישתמשו במוצרים שלה. (זה לא היה כזה נורא לשלם עבור שימוש אם זה היה כך מלכתחילה ולא כקרב מאסף)

תפסת מרובה לא תפסת
מצד שני אנחנו רואים פה את יאהו, מפסידנית לא קטנה בשם עצמה (למרות שבהסטוריה היא תיזכר כאחת מחברות האינטרנט האמיתיות החשובות הראשונות), שמיום היווסדה החליטה ללכת לכל הכיוונים האפשריים ולהיות הכל מכל דבר ושאפילו ראשיה לא יכולים לשים את האצבע על הכיוון, חוץ מאשר "קדימה". אבל כשאין מצפן, קדימה יול לכוון גם לרצפה. מה עשתה יאהו, רצה והסכימה למכור חלק משטחי הפרסום שלה לגוגלפלקס תמורת בצע כסף. לא מעט כסף, נכון, אבל גם בכלל לא הרבה במונחים של התעשייה.

למה להימכר למייקרוסופט זה רע? זה רע בעיקר לאינטרנט כי זה אומר שחלק מהתחרות נעלמה וזה אומר שחלק מהדעות נעלמו עם התחרות.
למה למכור שטחי פרסום ישירות לגוגל זה רע?  כי זה אומר שחלק מהתחרות בין מנועי החיפוש נעלמת ובכל מקום שנעלמת התחרות נעלם גם החופש במידה מסוימת.

לוזרים נמשכים ללוזרים
אז מה ראינו פה: מייקרוסופט המפסידנית שהפסידה את קרב האינטרנט לגוגל מנסה לקנות את יאהו המפסידנית, שסירבה להצעה הטובה ביותר שתקבל אי פעם ושבתורה הלכה לגוגל כדי למכור לה שטחי פרסום בשטחי הנדל"ן שלה, דבר שנראה מהצד כמו התרפסות.

מהצד עמדה לה גוגל כל העת, תמכה קצת ביאהו ובסוף קנתה לה נדל"ן. מי צוחק כל הדרך אל הבנק?

A couple of months ago I helped my friend Roy Man, co-founder of SaveAnAlien.com redesign their Facebook application user interface to get a better user experience and to get higher rates of user engagement in the application pages.

The thing that was missing most of all, in my opinion, was an easy to use, easy to navigate, menu.
We realized that the menu should call users for action in a one click only. After that, we created the list of functions, prioritized them, renamed some of them and put them on the page.

Although the main menu was the main task, we rethought about the upper "general" menu as well. This unit gives the user clear directions of where else he can go and creates a sense of depth, most important in a web game like SaveAnAlien.

Few more things we've touched were the feeds box, alien photos, list of friends and the system notices box, We organized them to create the sense of space while maintaining a connection between the rest of the UI units.

It was a pleasure working with Roy on the GUI design since he was very open to new ideas, and our conversations about it were fruitful. You should see him Photoshop, the genius.
