When asked on the Mozilla forum, I received, to my horror, the reason. It is called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationalized_domain_name" rel="nofollow">IDN</a> and it is evil. To me it seems like it undermines the global village aspect of the world wide web and introducing a new method for spoofing, phishing and other malicious website behavior, requiring messy whitelists and a load of other hack bullshit meant to deal with an otherwise insignificant contribution to the WWW architecture.
